D-Noticeは機密保持のため報道を禁止するむね 報道機関に要請する政府通告だが、本書は一世紀以上にわたる英国の防衛上のフィールドでのメディアとの絡み合いだけでなく、政府の内部の詳細な対応と変遷を紹介し、後期ビクトリア時代から、植民地時代、世界大戦、テロリズム、冷戦後までの英国軍とメディアとの衝突が記されている。
メディアの表現の自由と政府の防衛関係者との間の摩擦を、実例を通して述べ、両者の緊張にスポットをあてているところは興味深い。
付表、総合インデックスと脚注などを含めるとおよそ600ページもある公式記録であるが、防衛研究者、国防省関係者、ジャーナリスト、作家、出版関係者、大学などのジャーナリズム研究にお薦めする。なお本書の著者は門奈教授の友人である。「小峰満子」
